
Timorese Youth Gather to Discuss the Impacts of Climate Change at the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY)
Dili, 18 July 2024 – Laudato Si’ Movement Timor-Leste (LSM-TL), an environmental youth organisation, is hosting a three-day Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) on Climate Change from 18 to 20 July 2024 at UNIO in Dili, Timor-Leste. The conference provides a platform for young Timorese to connect and discuss the impacts of climate change in Timor-Leste and the broader region , and how they can be addressed.
The conference aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of young Timorese people, and equip them to become informed and effective communicators and negotiators on climate change. The ultimate goal of this conference is to produce a National Youth Statement on climate, which will contribute to the Global Youth Statement on climate change as part of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change conference.
Dircia Belo, the founder of the Laudato Si’ Movement Timor-Leste said “Young people’s involvement is crucial in combating climate change. They bring fresh ideas, innovative solutions, and urgency to the issue. By empowering them with knowledge, resources, and a platform for their voices to be heard, we can harness their energy and creativity to drive a meaningful change and build a sustainable future for all. ”
In his remarks at the opening session of the conference, Acting Counsellor for Economic Development at the Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste, Thomas Wooden said: “This youth-led event enables young Timorese to engage with climate change issues through a range of learning experiences, to develop skills in critical thinking and negotiation, and to empower them to advocate new ways to address climate change. Australia is honoured to support the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change for 2024!”
After the three-day conference, the youth will write their stories about the impacts of climate change in their communities and the role of youth in addressing climate change issues.
